On 19 March 2016, Techno India Salt Lake witnessed its first walkathon, EDG Walkathon- Walk for Hope. It was an initiative by the members of Team Geekonix, the official Science Club of the college. The event was organized in association with Tata Medical Centre, Kolakata’s largest Cancer hospital and iYouthMag, Kolkata’s First International Youth Online Magazine to support cancer awareness. The event aimed at creating awareness among the youth of the society towards cancer and how it affect lives of people who have lost and also people who have survived the deadly disease. This is the first mega event ahead of EDGE, the annual tech-fest of the college which will be stepping into its tenth edition this year.

Prior to the main event, a campaign was organized by iYouthMag and Team Geekonix on 12 March 2016 in various parts of Kolkata to ask people to donate for the cause. People showed great support and appreciated our effort for such a humble cause. In the campaign, we collected Rs 6000, donated generously by the people of the city. The collection was sent to the cancer patients at the Tata Medical Center to help them.

The event started at 6.30 am in the college ground with an introduction to the event bythe members of Team Geekonix, followed by words of encouragement and motivation from honorable guests, former footballer and Arjuna award winner Mr. Pradip Kumar Banerjee, chess grandmaster Mr. DibyenduBarua, the college’s Director Mrs. Manoshi Roy Chowdhury and Princial-in-Charge Dr. Rina Paladhi. The event witnessed enthusiastic and active participation from students, alumni as well as professors of the college. The event covered a distance of 5-6 km starting from the college campus en-routing Karunamoyee, Central Park and back to the campus. The students carried banners and posters spreading awareness and shouting slogans such as ‘Kill Cancer’, ‘Fight the fight Find the Cure’, ‘Cancer HataoDeshBachao’, ‘Cancer HaregaDeshJeetega’ and many others. They also requested people to support the cause by quitting smoking which is a major cause of the disease.

A voluntary contribution was collected from participants to donate to the cancer victims. Various NGOs joined like Bhumi, Feeding India, Art of Living, Adore India and Wall of Books joined hands to support the cause. The completion of the event was celebrated at the college campus with words of appreciation and acknowledgement by Dr. Jyotsna Goswami, Head of Department, Anaesthesia and Critical Care, Tata Medical Center, Kolkata and Mr. Anup Agarwal, volunteer at Art of Living. The event came to an end with cheers of joy and success.
The Walkathon was our little effort towards bringing a change to the society and help the nation fight this deadly disease with courage. We hope to serve our society with various other social cause like this.

A good deed will always leave you happy and satisfied.
